Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is widely used because of its chemical resistance, thermal stability, low friction and electrical insulation. Its hydrophobic surface is another important property, especially in products that contact water, chemical liquids or humid environments.
Why Does PTFE Resist Water Wetting?
PTFE contains a highly stable carbon-fluorine structure. This structure gives the material a low surface energy, so water does not easily spread across a smooth PTFE surface.
Instead of forming a continuous film, water tends to remain as droplets. A smooth PTFE surface commonly has a water contact angle of approximately 108° to 115%. The actual result depends on surface roughness, cleanliness, material formulation and testing conditions.
This low wettability helps PTFE products resist water absorption and reduce liquid adhesion on the surface.
PTFE Hydrophobicity in Different Products
The value of PTFE hydrophobicity depends on the product structure and working conditions.
In PTFE tubes and hoses, a smooth inner surface can reduce liquid adhesion and make the product easier to clean. This is useful for liquid-transfer systems, chemical equipment and customized tubing.
PTFE gaskets and sealing parts also benefit from low water absorption and chemical resistance. These properties help the material maintain stable performance when exposed to moisture or corrosive media.
PTFE filter materials have different requirements. The product may need to combine hydrophobicity with controlled porosity, air permeability or gas-liquid separation performance.
Dense PTFE and ePTFE
Dense PTFE products and expanded PTFE, or ePTFE, should be considered separately.
Dense PTFE tubes, rods, sheets and seals mainly use the material’s chemical stability, low friction and low wettability. ePTFE contains a controlled microporous structure created through an expansion process.
This microporous structure allows ePTFE to be used in waterproof breathable materials, air filtration and gas-liquid separation. Its performance depends on pore size, porosity, thickness and pressure conditions.
Hydrophobicity alone does not determine whether a material is suitable for a particular application. Product structure is equally important.
Does Modified PTFE Have Hydrophobic Properties?
Modified PTFE contains selected fillers such as carbon, graphite, carbon fiber, glass fiber or bronze. These fillers can improve wear resistance, load capacity, dimensional stability or electrical performance.
The filler type and surface condition may influence the way water interacts with the finished product. However, modified PTFE should not simply be classified as more or less hydrophobic than virgin PTFE.
The correct choice depends on the complete operating environment, including:
- Contact medium
- Working temperature
- Working pressure
- Friction and load
- Required electrical performance
- Surface condition
- Product dimensions and structure
