How Is a PTFE Mandrel Rod Made by Paste Extrusion?

A PTFE mandrel rod is a small-diameter solid PTFE profile produced in continuous lengths. Unlike conventional large PTFE rods made by ram extrusion or compression molding, this product is manufactured using a paste extrusion process.
SUKO can supply custom PTFE mandrel rods in coils, straight lengths or cut sections. Diameter, length, surface condition and packaging can be adjusted to match the customer’s production process.

PTFE Mandrel Rod Production Video

The video shows a SUKO paste extrusion line continuously producing a small-diameter solid PTFE rod. After extrusion and controlled thermal processing, the finished rod can be collected in coils or prepared in other supply forms.

How Paste Extrusion Produces a Solid PTFE Mandrel Rod

PTFE fine powder is prepared with an extrusion aid and allowed to condition. The prepared material is then preformed and loaded into the extrusion barrel.

During extrusion, the material passes through a specially designed die. The die determines the diameter and basic shape of the solid PTFE rod. The extruded profile subsequently undergoes controlled lubricant removal and thermal processing.

The main production stages include:

  1. PTFE fine-powder preparation
  2. Mixing with a suitable extrusion aid
  3. Material conditioning and preforming
  4. Continuous paste extrusion
  5. Controlled lubricant removal
  6. Thermal treatment
  7. Coiling, straightening or cutting

Process settings must be matched to the PTFE grade, rod diameter, extrusion speed and required surface condition.

Paste-Extruded Rod, Ram-Extruded Rod and Machined Mandrel

These products may all be described as PTFE rods, but their production methods and supply forms are different.

Product Type Production Method Typical Form Suitable Requirement
Paste-extruded PTFE mandrel rod Paste extrusion Small-diameter continuous solid rod Coils, straight lengths or cut sections
Ram-extruded PTFE rod Ram extrusion Larger rigid rod Machining stock and structural parts
Machined PTFE mandrel Machining from PTFE stock Stepped, tapered or threaded component Complex geometry and local features

Paste extrusion is particularly suitable when the required product is a continuous, small-diameter solid PTFE profile rather than a large machining billet.

Available Supply Forms

SUKO can develop PTFE mandrel rods according to the required diameter, length and downstream process.

Available supply forms include:

  • Continuous coils
  • Straight lengths
  • Cut-to-length sections
  • Custom packaging for batch handling
  • Samples for dimensional and process evaluation

The final manufacturing plan is determined after evaluating the required diameter, dimensional tolerance, surface condition, supply length and quantity.

Where Can PTFE Mandrel Rods Be Used?

Small-diameter PTFE mandrel rods can be used where a smooth, chemically resistant and electrically insulating solid profile is required.

Possible applications include:

  • Winding and wrapping process cores
  • Temporary support during forming or assembly
  • Insulating elements in electrical structures
  • Inner supports for braiding or covering processes
  • Small-diameter solid PTFE stock
  • Custom processing aids and assembly components

The appropriate PTFE grade and supply form should be selected according to the customer’s actual process.

SUKO Product and Equipment Capability

SUKO develops both PTFE products and PTFE processing equipment. This allows the product, die and extrusion process to be considered together during development.

For custom PTFE mandrel rod projects, SUKO can support:

  • PTFE material and process evaluation
  • Extrusion die development
  • Sample production
  • Surface and dimensional inspection
  • Coiled or cut-length supply
  • Batch production planning
  • Custom paste extrusion equipment

This combined capability is particularly useful when a customer requires a non-standard diameter or plans to establish its own continuous production line.

FAQ

Is a PTFE mandrel rod the same as an ordinary PTFE rod?

Not exactly. A PTFE mandrel rod is generally smaller in diameter and may be supplied in continuous coils. Ordinary PTFE rods are often larger and produced as rigid machining stock.

Can the PTFE mandrel rod be supplied in coils?

Yes. Products with suitable dimensions and flexibility can be collected and supplied in coils. Straight lengths and cut sections are also available.

Can SUKO customize the diameter and length?

Yes. Diameter, supply length, cutting length, surface condition and packaging can be developed according to the application and production quantity.

Is the rod hollow?

No. This product is a solid PTFE profile. A product with an internal passage should be specified as PTFE tubing rather than a mandrel rod.

Can SUKO supply the paste extrusion equipment?

Yes. SUKO develops PTFE paste extrusion lines, dies and related processing equipment. The equipment can be configured according to the intended PTFE profile and production requirements.
